Drawers are one of the most important components of a cabinet or table. They are made to contain files, documents, personal belongings and other important things related to your work, business or personal affairs. Drawers are constructed for security, durability and aesthetic quality. They are also designed to provide ornamental value to your home or office.
You need to have a basic understanding of the main parts of the drawer in order to successfully construct a good one. Every drawer is made up of four main components and these are the front, sides, bottom and back of the drawer.
Drawers are the most abused component of the cabinet and they should be built to last. Durable drawers have strong chest support and most of them are fitted with guides and drawer slides that make them easy to pull open and push to close.
There are three common types of drawers. These are:
1. The Flush Door
The flush door is designed to have its front flushed with the front of the cabinet. This is the most common type of drawer but it needs accuracy in construction because you need to flush its door perfectly in the face of the cabinet. Any error in the drawer construction will diminish the performance and aesthetic value of the entire cabinet.
2. Lipped Drawer
The lipped drawer is constructed with a rabbet cut on its edges. The rabbet cut acts as a lip to cover the edges of the drawer opening, and it can conceal any imperfection in the drawer construction.
3. Overlay Drawer
Among the three drawer types, the overlay drawer is the simplest and easiest to make, yet it provides an aesthetic visual value and professional look. It is constructed with its front attached to the center of the drawer, overlaying or covering the edges of the case or cabinet.
These are the three most common types of drawers. Since drawers are the most used or abused part of a cabinet, they should be built to last. The sides of the drawer should be strong and measured accurately as they provide the main support and efficiency for the entire system.
Drawer bottoms work to contain anything you may place inside the drawer. They should be properly attached to the undersides of the drawer with nails or high quality glue. A plain drawer bottom can already serve its purpose, but fitting it with a drawer organizer makes it more effective especially when you place various items inside your drawer.
Whatever type of drawer you desire for your cabinet, you should see to it that they are strong, durable and properly measured. These will make your drawers efficient and professionally built.
